dedicated to safe boating through education

Susquenango Squadron is a local nonprofit, non-military civic association and a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. The organization is dedicated to promoting safe boating through education and to facilitate the related social activities of the members. The Susquenango Squadron is located in Binghamton, NY and serves Binghamton, Johnson City, Vestal, Endicott, Owego and the surrounding communities.

As a public service, Susquenango conducts safe boating courses several times in the fall and spring of each year at the Johnson City High School.  Courses are announced in the local news media. Information may also be obtained by calling (607)669-4482

Susquenango members are both power and sail enthusiasts and are involved in all aspects of boating and/or social endeavors. Our knowledgeable members are volunteer teachers of our numerous boating courses. Squadron members have the option of taking advanced piloting and navigation courses and ancillary courses in boating. There are 11 advanced and related boating courses available free to members. There are also numerous learning guides of marine related topics. Squadron members enjoy a full schedule of social events throughout the year, including on the water rendezvous, piloting competitions, conventions and holiday get-to-gethers. The squadron also issues a monthly newsletter that keeps members informed of upcoming events and educational opportunities.

Our squadron name was taken from the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers that are central to the New York southern tier valley that makes up the local communities. Susquenango was founded in 1956 and was the 12th squadron of District 6 in upstate New York. It has approximately 130 members.

OUR HERITAGE

A boating enthusiast named Roger Upton founded the United States Power Squadron (USPS) in 1914 at the Boston Yacht Club. It originated to provide boating education to the “new” breed of power boaters of the era and has since evolved to recognize the need for boating education for all types of vessels. The USPS is a national organization of boating enthusiasts dedicated to making our waterways safer through education. It has squadrons as far away as the Virgin Islands. There are over 40,000 members in 400+ squadrons and 33 districts.
